Service was good, loved the place and outside seating, reminded me of a BBQ place in Texas. I liked that there were different cheeses but it was a little dry. I think the biggest disappointment was the dry rub wings. They chicken wings were advertised as dry rub but these were just deep fried plain wings with not much flavor. They were tender but no real flavor. I did enjoy the draft beer and our waitress was awesome! We are surprised at the reviewers who said the portions are large, because we did not find that to be the case at dinner. I ordered the pulled pork and by husband had the brisket. We shared the meat, so that we could have a taste of each. The pork was moist, but not as large a portion as at most barbecue places. The brisket was tender, but fatty. There was a tiny square of dry cornbread. The grilled corn on the cob was good, but it was not a typical full-sized ear. Some of the grilled vegetables were so overcooked that I couldn't eve bite into them. Our son-in-law had wings with a dry rub and a side of mac and cheese.. He said neither had much flavor. Our daughter had the collard green pouches, and they were tasty. The pimento cheese appetizer was good. There are places in Greenville that have much better barbecue. The setting is quite similar to Sidewall Pizza. They have outdoor seating at picnic tables, but there are no heaters. There is a grassy area with some chairs and some games for children. We really wanted to eat outside in their shady area that looked so inviting when we drove by the day before, but a torrential rain made us stay inside where it was absolutely freezing cold. The wait staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is easy-going - casual, great for families, groups of friends or co-workers. The food was very good - the pulled pork was tasty and the selection of sauces is impressive. The sides were generous. Give it a try! The food was very good. Our party had pulled pork, and hash. The prices are little high for BBQ, but the food was good and is all scratch made. Overall a nice addition to Travelers Rest. They also had some very unique beers. I really wanted to love this place. The Cheerwine BBQ sauce was delicious and the cauliflower casserole was good. The pulled pork sandwich was piled high and was topped with a nice amount of Coleslaw. My brisket sandwich looked like chunks of burnt ends. I took one bite, then decided to exchange it for the pulled pork sandwich. We probably won't be back. We stopped in for lunch and really enjoyed everything. I got the brisket sandwich and my wife got the brisket platter. My only complaint is that they left a few items off of my sandwich that were listed on the menu. I asked about it and they fixed it. The service was friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is neat. The place smells amazing! As soon as you get out of your car you can smell the meat smoking. We will definitely go again.
The fried calamari with spicy peppers, kalamata olives and Pecorino cheese is a winner, as are the sliders, which come outfitted with house-made toppings and pack a huge flavor. While the space that houses the restaurant was initially slated to be a barbecue place, owners, Andy O'Mara and Loren Frant changed course when they found the space at 21 Monkey wrench smokehouse. Monkey Wrench was originally supposed to be where Rocket Surgery is, but plans changed when the building at 21 N. This will be set up close to the trail for those seeking a bite or a monkey wrench smokehouse but not wanting the full restaurant experiences. The menu is loaded with choices standard with BBQ shacks, but they seem to have put a twist on a few of them. Their cornbread is more like a corn cake with a melt-in-your-mouth texture and hint of sweetness.
